The Big Chop – A Life Transformation

Updated: Apr 21

Leaping into a new chapter of my journey, I decided it was time for a transformation. I cut my hair off!

Well, in the modified words of Tina Turner’s song, what’s hair got to do with it?!

Hair has represented a part of my identity for years. I’ve had medium to long hair: straight, curly, colored, slicked back, braided, twisted... you get me. But the big “chop” was inspired by a desire to live and move more freely, without the weight and burden of combs, brushes, special products and endless accessories. It’s the freedom to just be. To wake up and go without worrying about what my crown looks like, especially in rainy, humid, muggy weather. In the words of India Arie’s song, I am not my hair.

So, with the help of my long-time hairdresser Zaharaa from Zar Hair Bar, and her wonderful staff, we made it happen. As the hair fell away, I felt relieved and immediately embraced this new look. Brash, bold, unique and fresh. It marked the release of the old and the welcoming of the new. Freedom. Rejuvenation. Breath. And fresh energy.

The big chop was a step towards the renewal of self.

So, are there any “big chops” in your life you need to explore? Hair is often symbolic of other aspects of our lives.

The video shared by Zar Hair Bar captures the essence of my life’s “big chop”. Enjoy!
